Episode 3 (9 January 2013)

"Shortly before leaving Johannesburg in October last year, Rob Otty told me to work hard, but also to take time to enjoy myself and use the opportunity to do some exploring. I’ve taken this advice seriously over the past few weeks. "

Shortly before leaving Johannesburg in October last year, Rob Otty told me to work hard, but also to take time to enjoy myself and use the opportunity to do some exploring. I’ve taken this advice seriously over the past few weeks.

The Brisbane office closes over the Christmas and New Year period. I spent most of this time on the aptly-named Sunshine Coast, where the sun rises before 5 am and temperatures are often 30 ºC before breakfast. Fortunately there are also endless stunning waves to cool off in.

I enjoy the freedom of travelling alone. It has also brought me out of my comfort zone in having to seek out other people when I want company. The downside is that I’m hardly ever in my own.

Photographs! I’ve mastered the art of asking strangers to take my picture (an exercise in trusting that they won’t run off with my iPad) or relying on my feet as a reminder that I was actually there.

Here are some of my highlights (you can view the photos in the pictures tab on this website):

  • spending a day cruising along the Brisbane River;
  • cuddling koalas and relaxing with the kangaroos at the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary;
  • climbing Mount Coolum (which is technically a large hill, but impressive nevertheless);
  • climbing Mount Coolum (which is technically a large hill, but impressive nevertheless);
  • welcoming in 2014 with a bonfire and fireworks on the beach; and
  • taking a 4x4 adventure tour of Fraser Island.

This weekend I’m driving down the Gold Coast to Byron Bay (the eastern tip of Australia), and at the end of the month I’m flying off to Hamilton Island for a (very brief) taste of the high life.

It’s hard to believe that in exactly one month’s time these feet will be on home soil. A bittersweet thought, but hopefully not the end of my travels.
