My name is Megan Osborn and I am articled to the Durban office of Norton Rose Fulbright. I am currently serving my final rotation in the London office. This is what I am up to:
I can’t believe that my six month secondment to London is nearing its end! It has been a fantastic experience; I have worked extremely hard but have also manged to find the time to travel and enjoy all that London has to offer.
Public transport has made exploring this beautiful and vibrant city so easy and I have been lucky enough to experience some truly fantastic moments in London. My highlights include; cycling around Hyde Park, dining at the Duck & Waffle and Gordon Ramsey’s Bread Street Kitchen, trainee drinks at Sky Gardens and the New York Winter Ball (NRF Christmas party).
Spending December in London has been a magical experience. From the Christmas lights that line Oxford and Regent Streets’ to the Christmas markets along the Southbank of the Thames; Throw in numerous ice rinks set up around the city, the smell of mulled wine, the sound of carols and you have the recipe for a perfect London Christmas! We even had a Christmas jumper day at work in support of a local charity – you won’t believe how many jumpers fly off the shelves here! Christmas jumpers are definitely an essential item for one’s December wardrobe!
Over the Christmas vacation I was able to travel to Venice for a week, which turned into another amazing trip. My favourite moments include Midnight Mass at St Mark’s Basilica, visiting Lido and Murano islands, (endless) Nutella gelatos in St Mark’s Square and last, but definitely not least, sitting in a gondola gliding down the Grand Canal and then veering off through the narrow waterways!
I have also been able to catch up with a number of old school and varsity friends who have relocated to London, they have been more than willing to share their favourite parts of the city with me.
Working in the London office has opened my eyes to the endless opportunities that a career in law has to offer. One of the many advantages of working at a firm like Norton Rose Fulbright is the number of exciting global matters in which you can become involved.
I have been fortunate enough to have been involved in some exciting global projects, as well as attend many internal discussions, client seminars and other events on topical issues such as Brexit. The London office is always buzzing, and there are numerous client events, lunches, presentations and client meetings happening throughout the day. It has been an incredible experience to be a part of!
The London office also offers a range of employee networks, sports and social clubs that you can join. This is a great way to meet colleagues from other teams. I joined the Women in Norton Rose Fulbright Network (WiN) and have attended a few of their exciting events.
The past five months in London have been full of rewarding experiences. When I look back I can see how far I have come and how much I have grown as a person. To think that I only have a few more weeks in this wonderfully energetic city evokes such mixed feelings. As much as I am looking forward to some South African sunshine (I have started to forget what the sun looks like, I also feel quite nostalgic at the thought of leaving this fantastic city.
One day, I hope to have the opportunity to return to London and continue this rewarding journey with NRF.
